As belts tighten across Wall Street, algorithmic trading is helping the sell side tackle market fragmentation cost-effectively, speed up markets and cut back on staff.

"Sell-side firms are under tremendous cost pressure right now to do more with less and reduce head count," says William Harts, president of New York-based electronic trading consultancy Harts & Co. and former head of algorithmic trading at Bank of America. "That means far more automation and the use of algorithmic trading.
