Major financial services firms are moving some of their processing work to facilities run by technology companies such as IBM Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) and Sun Microsystems, pure data center managers like Equinix and Savvis, and even Amazon, with its Elastic Compute Cloud.
Firms "may have the data center space but not the power and cooling to address high-performance equipment," says Christina Cunningham, project executive for IBM's Deep Computing capacity-on-demand program. Or they might be running out of time.
