EU Official Calls on Firms to Provide Leadership

European capital markets have made great progress over the last decade, but the current market turmoil calls for serious leadership from investment bankers, says David Wright, the European Commission's deputy director general of internal markets.

Europe's wholesale markets are growing twice as fast as gross domestic product and faster than those in the U.S., said Wright last week at a conference in London on the European Union's Markets in Financial Instruments Directive. "It is a pretty staggering change from where we were ten years ago," he said.
